It learnsMinecraftby living it.
Reicraft gives Adapt-1, a learning engine from REI Labs, a body in Minecraft. Code does the hands and follows the game's own recipes; the calls that keep it alive are Adapt-1's, learned from what happens to it. Being built now, to learn live on stream.
- 01A first home
- 02Dusk: home, or dig in?
- 03Deep and dark: how deep?
- Game
- Minecraft Java 1.21.4
- Mode
- Survival, Normal
- Brain
- Adapt-1, not a language model
- Learning live
- Not yet
01/How it works
The hands are code. The calls are its own.
01
The body
Code walks, mines, crafts and builds, and follows the game's own recipes and advancement tree, like a player who read the wiki. It is disclosed.
02
The brain
Adapt-1 makes the calls that decide how a life goes, and learns how each option turns out, from its own lives only.
03
The memory
From its failures and deaths it forms rules, shown in its own returned words.
- Dusk, far from home, carrying iron. It chose go home, the option that had gone best so far. Home before dark. The iron is kept.
- A skeleton on the ridge. Full health, a bow in hand. It chose shoot, the option it knew least. Shot from cover, no damage taken. Shooting moves up.
- Deep in a cave at night, three hearts left. It chose keep mining, the option that had gone best so far. A creeper. It died, and the iron with it. It remembers: Mining on at night with low health killed it.
02/The calls
The calls that decide a life.
A player who read the wiki knows the recipes. What makes a player good is judgment, and that is what Adapt-1 is given to learn: a few options each time, and how each one turned out.
01
Meeting a mob
Fight, shoot, run, or wall itself in.
02
Dusk, far from home
Go back, or dig in where it stands.
03
Going down
How deep to mine, and how.
04
The night
Sleep at home, shelter, or work by torchlight.
05
After a death
Go back for its things, gear up first, or start again.
06
A new stage
Ready for the Nether, or not yet.
It starts with the calls that make the most difference, picked by tests before it plays live.
03/What it is not
What it is not.
- Not a language model.
- No prompt, no text memory and no generated code in its decisions.
- Not a speedrun.
- Survival on Normal in a fresh random world: no commands, no teleports.
- Not steered.
- Nobody types its goals.
- Not perfect.
- Its deaths, stuck minutes and restarts will be counted on screen.
- Not the brain that started.
- Its first-life self will be kept frozen, to compare.
04/Where it stands
It has not learned live yet.
The body and the brain are being built and tested on their own first, so the brain never learns the body's mistakes. Its first live lessons come next, on a world of its own. No dates: it goes live when it is ready.
Now
The body
Being built: hands that walk, mine, craft and build, fluent enough to be worth watching.
Now
The brain
Being readied: Adapt-1 makes the calls that keep it alive and learns from what happens to it.
Next
First lessons
Its first live learning runs, on a world of its own.
Later
On stream
Every decision on screen as it happens, and what it learned from it.
Goal
The dragon
From a bare spawn to the end of the game, on what it learned.
05/How you will watch
Live, on stream, with its brain on screen.
When it learns live, the stream shows the game and the brain together, simple by default and in detail on demand. Every number on it will be a value Adapt-1 returned, or marked as derived from them.
- Coming
The call on screen
Its options as it has learned them, its choice, and how it turned out.
- Coming
The rules it forms
As it forms them, in its own returned words.
- Coming
Every life
A run log: how far each life got, and what ended it.
- Coming
Deaths by cause
Across its lives, falling or not.
- Coming
Its first self
Beside it, on the same situations.
